Architecture and Craftsmanship

Traditional architecture and craftsmanship in Tierra de Campos is mainly based on mud, beehives, wine cellars, thatched huts and pigeonīs houses which are representative examples of an architectonical craft work with a lot of nostalgic connotations and beauty.

Pigeonīs houses are the symbol of this mud architecture, they can be squared or rounded. Nowadays most of them are not used, but they are being recovered, so we can see now whitened pigeonīs houses in the villages of Tierra de Campos. This has been possible thanks to public and private initiatives and it has also been possible thanks to the gastronomical revival of pigeon food in the area of Tierra de Campos.

Wine cellars belong to this traditional craftsmanship and they were digged with peaks and spades. They were used to keep wine in them and there was a winepress next to them, where grapes were stepped.Breathing spaces also called "zarceras" can be seen outside and they were built in different shapes.

Villages are pure artisan works in themselves, squares and streets covered by arcades with wooden or stone columns, houses made with mud, straw and stones("tapial"), sun-dried bricks or common bricks which make no difference between the ground and houses, making them an extension of ground.

Popular tradition is also reflected in particular and marvellous craftsmanships which are appreciated very much because of their artisan value.

In Tierra de Campos there are lots of pottery centers, leather craftsmen, textile workshops, carpenters, etc.
