As a rural area, Tierra de Campos depends on land (agriculture and cattle raising), being a typical characteristic in villages with no so many people. In some of these villages 100% of people work in this primary sector.
On the other hand, there are areas where other sectors have been developed, especially those villages with many people, although this phenomenon is also shared by other villages that are not so big, but that do not depend on agriculture.
Agriculture is very important in Tierra de Campos because industries and services which are there are centred on covering the necessities of agrarian population.
Among the agrarian sector, cattle raising is very important, mainly paultry, porcine and above all ovine sectors, being Tierra de Campos an area with an important number of sheeps.
Unemployment has gone down in Tierra de Campos compared with 1990. This favourable statistic is due to the loss of population in the area and not to an employment increase.
Industry in Tierra de Campos is not relevant nowadays and is centred on few areas. The main sectors of long ago have gone down in a progressive way and nowadays there are only few examples of their previous period of prosperity. A traditional industry with some examples of that previous ones is that one related to cereals, mills, wheat factories and bread ovens.
There is also a metallurgical industry, a legacy of the past and that between the 70s and 80s was in crisis and most of the companies of this sector disappeared. There has been a slightly recovery in the few companies that are still on active service nowadays. There are also some companies that produce agricultural machinery.
Another important industry and the one which has more possibilities in the future is the agro-alimentary industry because it links the productive process, which is inherent to the industrial sector, with agricultural and cattle raising proper works. It could be a source of richness really important and an important element to make rural people stay in their villages.
There has been an important economical development based on local factors of production, which has institutional support, and it has the objective to create a proper surrounding to satisfy the implication of local workers and the use of the benefits derived from this work. This is the philosophy of LEADER I and LEADER II Programmes (arranged by the Development Group for Tierra de Campos) which have been developed for four years in the area.
