The first reference to the name Tierra de Campos was quoted by Alfonso X the "Wise" in his first "General Chronicle" of Spain, when he wrote: In 735 Annus Dei, Alfonso I "the Catholic" come to Tierra de Campos, the one which is delimited by the rivers Esla, Carrión, Pisuerga and Duero, and conquered the whole territory...." Despite this fact, it is quite clear that there were settlements before theVIII century, first the Vacceos , then the Romans and later the Goths inhabited these lands (Tierra de Campos was called before "Goths Countryside").

When the Muslims came to Spain, Tierra de Campos was not yet an isolated area in the frontier between Christians in the North and Muslims in the South. But in the middle of the IX century it began to be repopulated by Ordoño I, King of Asturias. After that it was a battle camp of feudal fights between the Lords who inhabited the kingdoms of León and Castilla.

In the Middle Ages, several villages had a lot of commercial and economical importance, as Villalón de Campos and Medina de Rioseco. Nevertheless, since the XVIII century the area began a decadence period and nowadays it is not one of the most profitable areas in the region. In spite of this fact, Tierra de Campos has a lot of richness (cereals, cheeses, hystory, culture...) which is necessary to to be exploited in the benefit of its inhabitants.
